Ideas about extraterrestrials arise from what we are familiar with. They range from similarities to differences to the completely unfathomable. Finding ways to communicate with beings who are both mysterious and yet possibly just like us mirrors the challenge of how members of different cultures and language communities can understand each other when no shared framework exists. The adventure of freehand translation offers a unique opportunity to learn – not only about the foreign language but also about our own, as well as the tacit assumptions we hold regarding the nature of language and thought.
