UNIVERSEH EMI (Meeting 4)

Advantages and disadvantages of teaching and learning in a foreign language.

We are delighted to invite you to our English-Medium Instruction in Higher Education) Special Interest Group Meet-up 4. Our speaker in October 2025 will be:

Isobel Kersting MA, a graduate of University of Aberdeen, who taught at the universities of Reims, Bonn, and Munich. She is currently teaching English in the language centre at the HHU in Düsseldorf.

Here is what she wants us to know about her talk:

On the surface this is a straightforward topic, which we will be examining in relation to different aspects i.e. competency, confidence, cognition, content and culture, among others.

We will be weighing up the pros and cons of foreign language usage in the classroom today and for the next generation.

However, the topic also throws up deeper, more philosophical reflections on truth and the purity of language, which we will be touching on and involving you, the participants, to discuss and share your point of view.

The talk will be a mixture of a presentation followed by an open discussion with all participants. It would be useful if the participants were willing to have their camera on and take part fully in the ensuing discussion in order to get the most out of the event.\

👉Please register here by 22 October to join the meet-up:  here.
