Katja Merkle Söderholm – a lecturer at Luleå University of Technology with 30 years of experience in language teaching. She currently teaches Swedish and German as a foreign language.
About the Talk
Just like many other universities, Luleå University of Technology offers many courses and programs in English. This requires that the staff no longer teach in their first language but for most of them in a foreign language.
The talk will on the one hand give a picture of how the current status at LTU regarding teaching courses in English looks like. On the other hand, the talk will be a presentation of what happens in the classroom if a teacher who speaks English as a foreign language meets students who mainly speak English as a foreign language and who want to learn Swedish. What are the obstacles students and teacher meet and what is required of the teacher to make language learning as successful as possible for the students. The talk will be followed by an open discussion, inviting all participants to share their questions, tips, experiences, and thoughts on the topic.
