This course will contribute to their training as engaged and responsible specialists and give them an opportunity to make a meaningful impact by sharing their knowledge with the general public.
Concretely, the course will be divided into two parts. The first part will consist of a 10h MOOC devoted to (1) theoretical considerations related to popular science and science communication, (2) the identification of the target audience and distribution channels, as well as (3) language and linguistic exercises. The participants are expected to dedicate at least 10 x 1 hour for this part of the course.
The sessions will be organized as follows:
- Introduction: getting to know each other and course introduction (live session)
- What is popular science?
- Targeting your audience
- Using the right explanation techniques
- Communicating beyond words
- Getting started with your project (live session)
- Storyboards
- Language focus: prosody and pronunciation
- Language focus: constructing proximity
- Last check before you really get started (live session)
The second part will consist of various coaching sessions organized in person during an onsite practical workshop week in Namur. We will guide the participants in the development of a storyboard and a video popularizing a concept from their discipline related the central topic: space (e.g., the history of star gazing, the effects of microgravity on astronauts’ bodies, the legal aspects of space exploration activities, the capabilities of a Mars rover, or cosmic humanism).
