UNIVERSEH EMI: Meet-up 7

We invite you to join Meet-up 7 of the UNIVERSEH EMI Special Interest Group — a space for sharing experiences, discussing challenges, and exploring effective practices in English-Medium Instruction in international and multilingual academic environments.

The meet-up is titled: From Science to Communication: Teaching in English Across Academic Cultures.

Our speaker on 15 May 2026 will be:

Wojciech Tabiś, a professor of physics at AGH University of Krakow, where he is actively engaged in teaching across all levels of higher education. His courses range from foundation undergraduate physics to advanced, specialized topics, including the use of large-scale research infrastructures such as synchrotrons in physics and materials science.

He has extensive experience teaching in international and multilingual environments, with a particular interest in delivering subject-specific content effectively in English as a foreign language.

His teaching practice is shaped by a strong research background in condensed matter physics, as well as hands-on experience gained at leading international institutions, including Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien), the High Magnetic Field Laboratory (LNCMI) in Toulouse, and the University of Minnesota.

During his time abroad, he was involved in both teaching and academic development. His current teaching focuses on making advanced scientific topics more accessible and on supporting students working in English in technical subjects.

About the Talk

With English now central to scientific communication, many European universities have expanded their teaching in English, even in traditionally non-Anglophone contexts. This has added demands on academic staff to deliver complex content effectively in a foreign language.

This talk draws on teaching experience in both English-speaking and non-English-speaking academic systems. Reflecting on time spent at institutions such as the University of Minnesota and in Europe, the presentation offers a personal perspective on learning how to teach in English as a foreign language.

Rather than focusing on formal pedagogy, the talk presents practical insights and reflections on classroom communication, adapting teaching styles, and navigating different academic cultures. It also highlights how international experience can shape more flexible and effective approaches to teaching in multilingual and international environments.
