European universities: between the local and the innovative

On 12 December, the Academy of research and higher education of Belgium (ARES) organized a workshop devoted to European University Alliances.

The workshop aim was be to deepen understanding of these alliances and encourage the exchange of practices through two major themes: local roots and innovation.

These transnational alliances bring together higher education institutions that work together to establish sustainable partnerships across Europe. Following successive Erasmus+ calls launched by the European Commission since 2019, no fewer than 560 higher education institutions (HEIs) have now formed 64 European alliances.

In the French-speaking community of Belgium (FWB), six institutions are currently part of these alliances: ULB (CIVIS), UMONS (EUNICE), UCLouvain (Circle U), ULiège (UNIC), HEPL (UNIGREEN) and UNamur (UNIVERSEH). Belgium is one of the leaders in this field, with all its universities having been selected for an alliance project.

The first part of this workshop highlighted the way in which these alliances are implemented locally, illustrating their impact through concrete examples of cooperation and development that reflect regional dynamics. The second part focused on the innovative practices arising from these alliances, highlighting initiatives that contribute to the deployment of the academic mission of the institutions that are members of them.

This workshop bought together representatives of these alliances from higher education establishments.

Professor Anne-Sophie Libert represented UNamur (UNIVERSEH) at the workshop.
