STEAM initiation courses for children : Space was this year’s theme

University of Namur's STEAM initiation courses for children took place from 8 to 12 July 2024. Aimed at children aged from 6 to 12, the courses were designed to raise awareness of STEAM fields through creative activities. This year's theme was space.

The children met Boris Hespeels, a researcher in biological sciences at UNamur. He provided them with a strain of Blob to reproduce, enabling each child to adopt one, care for it and study its behaviour throughout the week.

Working with Gaetano Licata, an art teacher from the Haute École Charlemagne in Liège (college), the children also took part in creative workshops using recycled objects. Individually, they made astronaut accessories such as back thrusters and communication instruments. Together, they built a satellite with a wingspan of almost a meter.

A guided tour of the Stellar Scape exhibition at the Pavillon was the highlight of the week. The exhibition gave the children an insight into the space debris orbiting our planet. They discovered the challenges that these debris pose for space missions and the importance of managing this waste for the future of space exploration.

Finally, the course ended with an exhibition of the children’s work. The exhibition was an opportunity for the children to talk about what they had learned and to share their experience with their families and friends. The children were able to explain the process of creating their projects and what they had learned about space and science.
