11th International SES Workshop: Towards Space Sustainability

Few contest that sustainability is the challenge of our times. In order for future generations to continue to benefit from space activities we need dedicated rules to ensure their sustainable conduct. In 2019, the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space enacted the “Long Term Sustainability Guidelines for Outer Space Affairs”, a foundational document guiding the development and implementation of sustainable practices for space activities.

Thursday October 20th, SES, the world’s only multi-orbit satellite player and telecommunications network provider, in collaboration with the University of Luxembourg, Department of Law and UNIVERSEH organised its 11th International SES Workshop “Towards Space Sustainability”. The workshop focused on sustainability and its challenges, followed by panel discussions by academics and professionals in the space industry.

The panels tackled the questions of Life Cycle Assessments (LCA), Space Situational Awareness (SSA), and Space Traffic Management (STM).

The keynote speech by Justine Limpitlaw, visiting Adjunct Professor from University of the Witwatersrand covered the topic of ESG and the UN Guidelines for the long-term sustainability for outer space activities.

Professor Dr Mahulena Hofmann presented the new book ‘Space Legislation of Luxembourg: A Commentary’, an expert commentary on the laws by scholars from the staff of the renowned SES Chair in Space, Satellite Communications and Media Law of the University of Luxembourg, composed of P.J. Blount, Gabrielle Leterre, Antonino Salmeri, Laetitia Zarkan.

The students from the Master in Space, Communication and Media Law (LL.M.) and Interdisciplinary Space Master of the University of Luxembourg had a chance to visit the SES Satellites Headquarters, including the operation center and the dishes, to learn about satellite operations.

Closing Remarks by Professor Dr Mahulena Hofmann “We learned that space sustainability is an urgent issue and the regulations can be successful only if the initiative comes from the users, i.e. from the authorities.”
