Conference by Claudie Haigneré, the first European female astronaut

In the framework of “Sciences, ça tourne” project in collaboration with Vauban, Ecole et Lycée Français de Luxembourg and Institut français Luxembourg, under the auspices of the French Embassy in Luxembourg, UNIVERSEH is organising the second conference ‘Récit de la première femme française à aller dans l’espace’ by Claudie Haigneré, the first European female astronaut.

Claudie Haigneré is a French astronaut, doctor, and politician. She is the first French woman to work as an astronaut as well as the first European woman to visit the International Space Station. Born in 1957 in Le Creusot, France, Claudie was selected as a French candidate astronaut in 1985, after her selection she performed a wide range of experiments in life sciences, fluid physics and technology. On August 17,1996, she launched into space aboard Soyuz TM-24 and docked with the Mir space station. She returned to Earth on September 2, 1996. In 2001, Claudie became the first female European cosmonaut on a ‘taxi flight’ to the International Space Station as a Soyuz Flight Engineer. After her experiences in space, Claudie served in several political positions in France, including as Minister for Research and New Technologies. She has been a Senior Adviser to ESA’s Director General in European space policy, and ESA’s strategic adaptation. And she has served as CEO of Universcience, a French science museum that combined the Cité des Sciences and the Palais de la Découverte in Paris, to make science more accessible for the general public.

November 30, Claudie Haigneré, the first European woman in space, visited Luxembourg, as part of the programme of the project «Science ça tourne» organised by UNIVERSEH with Vauban, Ecole et Lycée Français de Luxembourg and Institut français Luxembourg, under the auspices of the French Embassy in Luxembourg.

First, Claudie Haigneré visited the LunarLab, one of the facilities that simulates lunar conditions for testing applications, at the SnT, Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust.
Students of the Interdisciplinary Space Master of the University of Luxembourg had a chance to interact with an ex astronaut. After, Mrs Haigneré gave a conference at the Lycee Vauban sharing her exciting experience in space.
